The Purpose of Drivers

Why do we need to have driver files on our PCs? Why is it important that these drivers are valid and updated? How can you know that the drivers you are using are right for your PC?

The drivers are there to ensure that all your hardware devices communicate properly with central computer system. Making things more complicated is the fact that drivers are specific to operating system and the corresponding device. Also, there are no set standards and as a result each manufacturer makes a different driver program. The situation with drivers becomes even more complex when you take into consideration different device models. For example, if you upgrade your monitor and you have the same computer and the same monitor manufacturer you still need to update your driver.

The process of updating drivers can be simple but it can also be frustrating. When you purchase a new peripheral device you almost always get the disc with the driver included. It is right there and there is no need to search for it. The problem comes when you try to install a device and you have no driver CD. It can be that you have purchased a used hardware (e.g. printer, monitor,...). Another possibility is that you have reformatted your hard drive and consequently you have to reinstall all your existing peripherals. Or you have changed your operating system and now your printer/monitor/keyboard is not working and you need to get new drivers for all these devices.

All these scenarios happen often and one thing they have in common is that the driver program is missing or is not updated. Searching internet for the right driver(s) can be time-consuming and potentially dangerous (e.g. you may download a virus with the driver file). Remember that drivers are specific to OS, manufacturer, model and the device type. You need to have all these correct to have your peripherals in working order.
